Introduction
Rijkswaterstaat is preparing the renovation and replacement of the ferry ports in Den Helder and Texel. This is necessary to ensure that the connection with Texel runs safely and smoothly. At the same time, the Maritime Cluster is investigating how this necessary replacement in Den Helder can be used to develop the area around the ferry port in an attractive and future-proof way.
A new layout of the approach area and the possibility of filling in part of the harbor basin are being considered. This can create extra space for better accessibility, parking facilities, new business activity and a more attractive environment.
The collaboration between Rijkswaterstaat and the Maritime Cluster offers the opportunity to not only renovate the ferry port, but also improve the entire area – from layout to traffic flow on busy days.
Insight into what it yields
We are investigating whether part of the harbor basin at the ferry port can be filled in. This will allow the space in the area to be used more intelligently and attractively, with attention to both good accessibility and an attractive environment. Possible revenues are:
- Extra space for maritime business activity
- Improved parking facilities
- Better accessibility and traffic flow
- An attractive environment
