Together forward in the Maritime Cluster

Den Helder has many sea-related activities, such as shipping, navy, shipbuilding, offshore (energy), ports and maritime services.

This is the Maritime Cluster.

At the same time, there are issues that affect the Maritime Cluster. For example, how do we deal with climate change and the threat of rising sea levels? What opportunities are there to connect the port to developments such as offshore wind? And what does that mean for the future of the port and for the presence of the Royal Netherlands Navy in the city? These questions require good answers, also for the longer term.

Latest news

Moorman Bridge

The current Moorman Bridge from 1954 is outdated and needs to be replaced around 2030. The new bridge will be located approximately 700 meters southeast, in the Nieuwe Diep. This will give seagoing vessels free passage on both sides of the quay, providing extra space and development opportunities for berths.

Ravelijnbrug

The Ravelijnbrug must form a continuous route over the Nieuwe Diep/Nieuwe Werk,
approximately at the level of the Koopvaarders lock. With the Ravelijnbrug, we can better separate the traffic flows in Den Helder. People with different destinations,
such as the naval port, the civil port and the TESO, now drive together over the N250 through the city. This is causing increasing problems.

Weg Nieuwe Diep/Nieuwe Werk

The Nieuwe Diep and the Nieuwe Werk are two roads in the port area of Den
Helder, located between the naval port and the city. The Moorman Bridge connects the area with the naval port. And the Van Kinsbergen Bridge forms the connection with the city. The roads and bridges are important for sea-related activities, such as shipping, shipbuilding, offshore (energy), navy and maritime services.

Buitenveld

In the coming years, the Ministry of Defence will be renewing its accommodation for personnel. A modern, comfortable and sustainable building will be constructed on the Buitenveld site in Den Helder, where employees of the Royal Netherlands Navy can stay and spend the night. This will free up space at the Marinehaven for other activities.

Willemsoord Navigation Route

Willemsoord is a national monument and forms the historical heart of Den Helder’s maritime identity. The area is currently only accessible from one side for recreational craft.
This limits its use and means that the possibilities for experience, recreation and economic activity are not fully utilized. A second access via the water can increase the liveliness on and around Willemsoord.

Den Helder Airport

Den Helder Airport is strategically important for civil and military tasks. The municipality of Den Helder, the province of Noord-Holland and the Ministry of Defence are working together on growth and sustainability.

Havendijk

The Havendijk (2.6 km) protects the hinterland along Het Nieuwe Diep. In 2021, it became clear that 655 meters between the Paleiskade and Koopvaarders lock is no longer water-safe. Since 2023, the Hollands Noorderkwartier High Water Board has been investigating how this part can best be reinforced.

Redevelopment Palace Location

The building of the Naval Command in Den Helder, also known as ‘The
Palace’, will be given a new purpose. It will become a place where maritime innovation and education come together. In this way, the Ministry of Defence and its partners show what is happening in the maritime world.

Renewal of TESO Ferry Terminal

Rijkswaterstaat is preparing the renovation and replacement of the ferry ports in Den Helder and Texel. This is necessary to ensure that the connection with Texel runs safely and smoothly. At the same time, the Maritime Cluster is investigating how this necessary replacement in Den Helder can be used to develop the area around the ferry port in an attractive and future-proof way.

The Maritime Cluster Den Helder is the area program where national ambitions take shape. Here the municipality of Den Helder, the Ministry of Defence and the province of Noord-Holland work intensively together on the growth of the Royal Netherlands Navy and the energy transition – two important tasks for the Netherlands. These investments are not only of national importance, but also ensure better accessibility and quality of life in Den Helder and the Kop van Noord-Holland region.
