Ravelijnbrug

Introduction

The Ravelijnbrug is intended to form a continuous route over the Nieuwe Diep/Nieuwe Werk, approximately at the level of the Koopvaardersschutsluis (lock). The Ravelijnbrug will allow us to better separate traffic flows in Den Helder. People with different destinations, such as the naval port, the civilian port, and the TESO ferry, currently travel together on the N250 through the city, which is causing increasing problems.

With the Ravelijnbrug (referred to as the ‘bridge over the Koopvaardersbinnenhaven’ in the administrative agreement), a portion of the traffic will turn off earlier and cross the Nieuwe Diep/Nieuwe Werk towards the port. As a result, less traffic will pass through the city center, and fewer traffic jams will occur. Texel, the naval port, and the civilian port will become more accessible. However, the most important aspect of the Ravelijnbrug is the quality of life, which will significantly improve by reducing the number of traffic jams.

Currently, not only traffic to the center but also to the naval port, the civilian port, and the ferry to Texel all travel on the N250 through the city. This is causing increasing problems. A bridge over the Koopvaardersbinnenhaven (Ravelijnbrug) can form a continuous route over the Nieuwe Diep/Nieuwe Werk, approximately at the level of the Koopvaardersschutsluis. The Ravelijnbrug will allow us to better separate traffic flows in Den Helder. The most promising location for a new bridge connection is currently being investigated.

Insight into what it yields

With the Ravelijnbrug, a portion of the traffic will turn off earlier and follow the Nieuwe Diep/Nieuwe Werk towards the port. As a result, less traffic will pass through the city center, and fewer traffic jams will occur. Texel, the naval port, and the civilian port will become more accessible. However, the most important aspect of the Ravelijnbrug is the quality of life for the city, which will significantly improve by reducing the number of traffic jams.

Frequently asked questions

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions that we regularly receive.

The Ravelijnbrug is a new movable bridge over the Koopvaarders inner harbor, near the Koopvaarders lock. The bridge is part of a continuous route over the Nieuwe Diep/Nieuwe Werk towards the harbor and helps to disentangle the various traffic flows in Den Helder.

Traffic to the naval port, the civilian port and the TESO ferry port now all travels via the N250 through the city, which causes congestion and traffic jams. The Ravelijnbrug allows some of the traffic to turn off earlier towards the harbor. This reduces traffic in the center and improves traffic flow.

  • Less traffic and congestion in the center
  • Better accessibility to the port and Texel
  • Improved quality of life and a more attractive city

The project is part of the Administrative Agreement on the Development of the Maritime Cluster, a collaboration between the province of Noord-Holland, the municipality of Den Helder and the Ministry of Defense. The province of Noord-Holland is in charge of the project. Port of Den Helder and the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier are also involved.

The province is currently investigating the most promising location for the bridge. The intention is to determine a preferred location in the first quarter of 2026.
