Introduction
The Havendijk (2.6 km) protects the hinterland along Het Nieuwe Diep. In 2021, it was found that 655 meters between the Paleiskade and Koopvaardersschutsluis is no longer safe from flooding.
Since 2023, the Hollands Noorderkwartier district water board has been investigating how this part can best be reinforced.
This is an excellent opportunity to directly realize the required additional quay space and deepening of the navigation channel in Den Helder, an important ambition of the Maritime Cluster to accommodate more and larger seagoing vessels. This allows the Royal Navy to grow and the civilian port to serve the future offshore wind farms.

Insight into what it yields
With the Havendijk project, the district water board is strengthening water safety in the port of Den Helder. This offers opportunities to realize extra quay space and a deeper navigation channel. This allows larger ships to moor and both the navy and the civilian port to grow.
- Strengthening water safety of the port
- Extra quay space
- Space for larger ships
- Support for maritime and offshore development
Project Leader of Havendijk
In the Havendijk project, we are working on water safety and extra quay space to facilitate larger seagoing vessels. This is a project of the Hollands Noorderkwartier district water board (project leader Romee Huisman). The municipality of Den Helder and the Maritime Cluster are joining in to realize a wider quay.
